American, circa 1891-92

Created for the home of sugar magnate Henry Osborne Havemeyer and his wife Louisine, two of Louis C. Tiffany's most important patrons, this mosaic panel is a fragment of architectural decoration likely found in the exquisite entrance hall. The Havemeyer house, formerly located at 1 East Sixty-Sixth Street, is regarded as one of Tiffany's most remarkable commissions and took four years to complete. Tiffany Glass and Decorating Company was responsible for every decorative element of the home, including the iridescent glass-mosaic walls, lighting fixtures, intricately carved furniture, leaded glass windows, and ornamental cast bronzes, resulting in a "total environment” in quintessential Tiffany style.
