EXHIBITION: TIFFANY FAVRILE GLASS AND THE QUEST OF BEAUTY
November 17 to January 31
Lillian Nassau will be presenting the most extensive exhibition of Tiffany
Favrile Glass that has ever been held. There will be over 150 examples of
Tiffany glass, from every period and it includes examples of every type of
glass that was produced.
We are pleased to announce the publication of our new book Tiffany Favrile
Glass and the Quest of Beauty, by Dr, Martin Eidelberg.
This hardcover book contains over 100 stunning new color photographs of
Tiffany's Glass, as well as old archival photographs.
While greatly appreciated by collectors and historians, this is actually the
first in depth study of the glass itself. Dr. Eidelberg traces its
evolution from the 1890s through the years prior to World War I, carefully
studying the different types of glass that were produced and the sequence in
which they were created. Utilizing newly discovered documents, he explains
the development of iridescence and explores the development of Tiffany's use
of engraving and casing the glass to create dramatic new results. The
author offers a new interpretation of the coding system which is necessary
for understanding the chronology of the glass.
Dr. Martin Eidelberg is professor emeritus of Art History, Rutgers
University. He has written and lectured extensively on modern decorative
arts and French eighteenth century painting. One of the principal scholars
responsible for the revival of interest in the American Arts and Crafts
movement, he has publish widely on American and European glass and pottery.
For several decades he has studied the career of Louis C. Tiffany and has
authored several significant studies on the work of this American genius.
Among the many publications to which he has contributed are Masterworks of
Louis C. Tiffany (1989), Behind the Scenes of Tiffany Glassmaking: the Nash
Notebooks (2001), The Lamps of Louis Comfort Tiffany (2005) and A New Light
on Tiffany: Clara Driscoll and the Tiffany Girls. (2007).
