This low 8-sided inkwell is the larger of two models produced as part of the Bookmark Desk Set by Tiffany Studios around 1906. The Bookmark set was one of the more elaborately detailed sets produced by Tiffany; each piece in the set features heavily modeled bronze motifs inspired by 15th and 16th century printer’s marks.
The flat planes on the body of the inkwell, as well as the hinged lid, are adorned with high and low relief depictions of symbols and pictorial devices used to identify a printing house or family, including botanical representations and monograms.
This example retains the original “dull gold” patina, as described by Tiffany Studios in their 1910 publication Desk Sets and Useful Articles.
This Tiffany inkwell is signed and numbered on the underside.
